It’s October, and the holidays are just around the corner. Between Halloween and New Year’s, consumers are set on a buying spree. Earlier this year ComScore reported that Americans spent $29.1 billion online during the 2009 November-December holiday season, a number that is expected to increase for 2010.

How to Narrow Down Your Online Marketing Choices

There are a growing number of social media networks that can help market your business. It’s a good idea to market as many of these sites as possible, but you need to make sure to do it in a productive way that will benefit your business. Here are a few great ways to narrow down your social media choices and segment your online marketplace.

Shoot For Your Target

Traditional media like television and newspapers are created and marketed to attract their target audience. MTV attracts young adults, while the New York Times is aimed at business professionals. Online Social Media is not segmented and is very broad. You have to research to find where your potential audience is. This process can be daunting and overwhelming, but is necessary in order to find the right platform to advertise your product.

So we decided to do ask our Linkedin readers to find out what our business readership has experienced as the most effective ways they network. Here are some of those findings:

Social Media Sharing

Social media sites were some of the most popular responses with LinkedIn being the number one business networking sites, followed by Facebook, StumbleUpon, Twitter, SlideShare (where professionals and business upload their PowerPoint presentations and is one of the 1,000 most visited sites on the Internet) and Business Exchange (similar to LinkedIn, where you can share information with other business professionals in a variety of categories and industries and reach decision makers).
