While also called a “hashtag holiday,” trends such as #TravelTuesday or #MusicMonday may not mean much to some of you, but if there is one you should take note of, it should be “Follow Friday.” Known to the Twitter-sphere as #FollowFriday, #Follow or #FF, the basic premise involves mentioning users in a tweet and suggesting that others follow them. You can list companies you would like to promote, such as local organizations you are partnering with, or recent brands you’ve come across that you find interesting. Besides being a widely used hashtag holiday, follow Friday also has a lot of marketing advantages. Below are some key benefits on how to use follow Friday to benefit your brand.

1. Get More Followers

It’s a common perception that the more you tweet, the more followers you get. By mentioning people to follow, depending on whom you mention, you can align yourself with some influential people, thus generating interest amongst your followers and others who have seen that you are promoting certain people or brands.

2. Build Connections

If you’re trying to get noticed by a potential customer, you can reach out to them and show that you’re already willing to promote them on your own network. You can do this even after they become a paying client, but tweeting to a potential client or customer is a really great way to break the ice.

3. Increase Engagement

Engaging with your followers is always a good idea. If you’re just tweeting without any engagement, your tweeting efforts will only go so far. By promoting new people every Friday, you can ensure that you’re properly engaging people and in turn, hopefully they will return the favor.

4. Pay it Forward

If you have some ambassadors who are constantly retweeting your tweets, mentioning you or sharing your content, it’s always good to reach out and thank them. You can thank them by mentioning them in a follow Friday tweet to help them boost their following count- a worthy mention that will definitely be appreciated.

5. Expand Your Brand

If you’re tweeting for business, then follow Friday should be an essential part of your Twitter strategy. Since it’s a popular hashtag that a lot of people recognize, these tweets might get noticed more than others, which will give you a greater stage. If you want to say something important or promote a certain article or cause you’re interested in, promoting it on #followfriday is probably the best time to do so as you will get a greater audience.
If you’re interested in developing your brand through social media, this is definitely a great avenue to start at. While it does take a bit of research and time to make sure you’re getting good use out of your follow Friday mentions, it will pay off in the end if you are consistently seeing your follower count increasing, as well as getting positive feedback from those that you mention.
